Corrections

This site publishes facts about roughly 14,700 named care facilities. Some of them will be wrong. Here is how to tell us, and what we do about it.

What to include

Whatever you have. It helps if you can say which page, which figure, and what you believe the right answer is — but a message saying "the bed count on this page looks wrong" is worth sending. We would rather check a hundred reports than miss one.

What happens next

1. We aim to acknowledge every message within three working days. A person reads it. There is no ticketing system to disappear into.
2. We check the figure against the CMS file it came from, and against our code that derived it.
3. If we got it wrong, we fix it and it goes live at the next rebuild.
4. We reply to tell you what we found, including when we concluded the page was right.

When the error is ours, and when it isn't

These need different handling, and being clear about the difference matters:

• We calculated or displayed something incorrectly. Our fault, and the fastest kind to fix. This has happened and it will happen again — before this site was published we found and fixed a bug in our own code that had wrongly described inspection findings as uncorrected across thousands of pages.
• We described the data misleadingly — technically accurate but liable to be read the wrong way. We treat this as an error too, and usually fix it by changing wording across every affected page rather than just one.
• The federal record itself is wrong. We cannot change what CMS publishes, and we will not quietly substitute our own figure — a site that edits the public record to taste is worth less than one that doesn't. What we can do is note the dispute on the page, and point you to CMS, which has its own process for correcting provider data.

If you work at a facility we cover

Please write to us. You have information we structurally cannot have: what changed last month, what the inspection record doesn't capture, where a figure disagrees with your own records. We would much rather hear from you than have a page stay wrong.

Two things we will say plainly. We don't remove or improve a page in exchange for payment, and we don't take pages down because their contents are unwelcome — the data is public and reporting it accurately is the point of the site. But if a specific figure is wrong, or a page reads as implying something the record doesn't support, that is exactly what this address is for, and we will fix it.

Corrections we've made

Once the site has been live long enough to have a record worth publishing, this is where substantive corrections will be listed, with what was wrong and when it changed. A corrections process nobody can audit isn't much of a process.

Not the right place for

We can't help with complaints about care, billing, or a facility's conduct — we have no authority and no relationship with any facility. Those go to your state's survey agency or long-term care ombudsman, both of which can act where we can't. Nothing on this site is medical or legal advice.
